Venice lessons : industrial nostalgia : teaching and research in architecture / [editors, Harry Gugger [and five others]]. (OCLC #967143333)

This nice book showed up as a problem this morning. It seemed fine at first glance: a nice title page and verso matching the information on the cover, including title, author and publisher, and an ISBN (on the back cover and front matter), all matching the content in this DLC record.

BUT that record (and similar ones) all described a resource with around 60 pages, where the one in hand had 216 pages. Indeed, only about the first 60 pages appear to be children’s book material; there’s no new title page after that, but the content changes to a more serious work about the historic architecture of Venice; I’d have thought it was a bound-with, given the tape binding, but the pagination is continuous.

We found a record that matched the whole piece in hand, and included as explanation:

There was no second title page for the actual title of this book (“Venice lessons : industrial nostalgia : teaching and research in architecture”), only tiny print on the cover that is now mostly obscured by our barcode. Maybe there was a dust jacket that didn’t make it to cataloging? Also, a closer look at the children’s book content reveals added annotations in lighter print throughout.

To aid future catalogers who receive this piece, we’ve added the barcode from the front matter/back cover as an invalid barcode:

Ўзбек тили дарслиги : бошланғич мактабнинг тўртинчи синфи учун / М. Шамс, Т. Содиков. (OCLC #922535817)

The title page of this has the phrase “fourth class” spelled out (“тўртинчи синфи”), but on the cover it is abbreviated (“4-синфи”). The LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6 on Variant Title says they are only core for rare materials, but NLA PS considers most types of variant titles (including cover titles) to be core. I recorded this one to aid in searching:

Lebbeus Woods is an archetype. (OCLC #871557316)

This is the longest “cover title” I’ve seen yet! I decided to only include it as a quoted note, as it was so different from the title that appears on the title page and spine.

This is a collection of reproductions from an architecture exhibition, so gets a class number (including first cutter) for the artist (NA737.W66) subarranged by table N6, which says to use A4 for reproductions. This is the second such book from that artist from 2013 that we have in our catalog; if I hadn’t checked, they’d end up with the same call number!

Typically when you have two titles about the same subject by the same author, the item number (cutter) should be adjusted to shelflist, but the N6 table does not allow it; in this case, the call number gets a small letter b after the year:

This one also had a surprise in its ISBN. When I scanned in the barcode on the back, it also had a small b at the end! The title page verso has the version without the ‘b’, but the publisher has already used the ISBN for another title, so maybe they needed a way to distinguish between them. I included the version with the b in an 020ǂz in case other catalogers scan it in looking for copy.
