Chem sources-international–1998 edition. (OCLC #39262429)

This is the thickest book I’ve ever received for cataloging:

300 __ ǂa iv, 2259 pages : ǂb illustrations ; ǂc 29 cm

It made me wonder if RDA had exceptions in the rules for recording Dimensions of a volume related to a book’s thickness (as there are for the cover’s width). There don’t appear to be; it’s probably covered by pagination.

El día que España derrotó a Inglaterra : de cómo Blas de Lezo, tuerto, manco y cojo, defendió el Imperio español en América / Pablo Victoria. (OCLC #941791257)

RDA 3.5.2.6 on recording the Dimensions of Map, Etc., on Folded Sheet says that if
the sheet itself contains a panel or section designed to appear on the outside when the sheet is folded, then record the dimensions of the map, etc., and add the dimensions of the sheet in folded form, preceded by a comma. This resource has such a map folded up in the back, so I have recorded its dimensions this way in the physical description:

300 __ ǂa 351 pages : ǂb color illustrations, color maps ;
    ǂc 24 cm + 1 map (91 x 63 cm, folded to 24 x 17 cm).

RDA 3.5.1.4.11 on Dimensions of Sheets says, for folded sheets not intended to be read in pages, “record the height × width when extended followed by the height × width when folded” as in:

46 x 46 cm folded to 12 x 23 cm

Deep veils : Erik L’Heureux and Pencil Office / Erik L’Heureux and Grit Vltavsky. (OCLC #880198268)

This volume is oddly sized and bound. The white part is the cover, wrapped around the larger beige signatures; you can see page number “1” poking over the top. There are also about 15 (double-sided) sheets of different sizes tipped in throughout the book that are unnumbered (no space left in the page sequence), so I guess they are plates? Many of the numbered pages have only illustrations, and some smaller pages have only text; not how I usually think of plates, but I think they qualify.

RDA 5.5.1.4.14 on the dimension of volumes mentions the situation where the volume contains separate text blocks of varying dimensions (which is not precisely this case); it says in that case to record the height (or height × width) of the binding only – I think the spirit of this instruction is to record the dimension of the carrier, which is what is recorded in the copy I found:

21 cm

I mentioned the odd plate sizing in a note for identification purposes:

500 __ ǂa Plates of different sizes, smaller than numbered pages.

so I also included the plates, as they are mentioned in a note, per RDA 3.4.5.9.

Synopsis of benefits available to veterans and their dependents. (OCLC #903217739)

RDA 3.5.1.4.11 on recording Dimensions of sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record only the height of the sheet when folded.” Though the rule is no more specific than that, I chose to apply another rule for volumes (which this piece appears to be, but only technically is not):

RDA 3.5.1.4.14 on recording the Dimensions of volumes says to record only the height of the volume (in cm or mm as appropriate), unless the width of the volume is either less than half the height or greater than the height, in which case both are recorded. For this volume, that would be:

19 x 7 cm

and in the MARC:

300 __ ǂa 1 folded sheet (13 pages) ; ǂc 19 x 7 cm

RDA 3.5.1.4.3 on recording the dimensions of resources with cassettes as carriers says to record the gauge (i.e., width) of the film or tape in millimetres and use the metric symbol mm. As an example, it gives the gauge of VHS tape as “13mm”. This differs from our practice in AACR2, where we recorded the dimensions in inches: ½ in.

There is an alternative to RDA 3.5.1.3 which gives the option to record dimensions in the system of measurement preferred by the agency preparing the description. The national libraries have different recommendations for applying the alternative:

  • Library of Congress: Use inches for discs and audio carriers
  • National Library of Australia: Do not apply.
  • British Library: Use inches for discs.

We felt that our catalog would be more consistent (and our patrons best served, should they choose to look at that field) if we continued to use inches for videotape, so we made it our local policy to do so:

300 __ ǂa 1 videocassette (95 min.) : ǂb sound, color ; ǂc 1/2 in.

    21 x 23 cm
