Cotton flour bag (sack) towels : a recorded voluntary standard of the trade. (OCLC #890720497)

Cataloging commercial standards creates a fun opportunity to look up subject headings I’ve never used before, like:

650 _0 ǂa Dish towels ǂx Standards.

There is also a code for the Cont: fixed field for titles containing standards and specifications:

    Cont: u

A search for an LC classification correlated to “Dish towels” produced no results (though I was pleased to see Dishwashing–Fiction nearby), but the broader term “Towels” suggested TS1781, which is for Miscellaneous textiles including bagging, shawls, towels, etc. so we have the call number:

    TS1781 ǂb .C68 1951

La minificción en el siglo XXI : aproximaciones teóricas / Henry González Martinez, editor. (OCLC #886547249)

I always feel weird assigning the topical subject heading “Short stories” to collections of short stories (it seems more like a form/genre) but the scope note is quite clear about the usage:

Here are entered collections of stories. Works on the short story as a literary form and on the art of short story writing are entered under Short story.

This title is about a literary form similar to the short story (minificción, similar to flash fiction) which does not yet have a specific LCSH term, so I did the subject cataloging as:

    650 _0 Short story.
    650 _0 Spanish fiction ǂy 21st century.

Space architecture : buildings for the outer space / Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. (OCLC #880139534)

I worry about classifying any book that starts with “The mysteries of the Universe are yet to be unraveled.” The contents are broad, including a section on extraterrestrial buildings, but just as much space is given to the individual human senses as we should think about them when designing those buildings.

I ended up classing it with the Design Library’s other books on space architecture (which is different from Space (Architecture)!) under TL797 (Space stations).

Los orígenes de la lengua española en América : los primeros cambios en las Islas Canarias, las Antillas y Castilla del Oro. (OCLC #881499422)

I think this is the first time I’ve used America in a subject heading; often the books I catalog with “America” in the title are actually about the United States, but this one really is about the Americas in general, including surrounding islands.

I included the very broad geographic area codes:

043 __ ǂa n------ ǂa s------

Commentary on Plato’s Timaeus / Proclus. (OCLC #70059795)

When a set is published over a period of years, it is easy for its volumes to sneak onto their own records. The set may not benefit from the subject analysis afforded by separate records, and if classification is not done consistently, volumes may be separated (or even mis-ordered) on the shelf.
