A history of Ukrainian industry / Oleksander Ohloblyn ; with an editor’s pref., a retrospect by the author and indices. (OCLC #475510)

This volume includes the content of three titles; the first and third are in Russian, and the second is in Ukrainian. The title and editor’s preface are in English.

The Lang MARC fixed field should contain the code for the predominant language of the piece, excluding prefaces, introductions, forewords, and appendices. This DLC record created in 1973 has it coded as English:

Lang: eng

If I were cataloging this, I would have encoded it as Russian. Is this an old standard?

Ñahui : el rostro del Ecuador : serie audiovisual sobre los pueblos indígenas y negros del ecuador / Fundación ARIG ; dirección: Igor Guayasamin, Lilian Granda. (OCLC #919504054)

This 22 volume set has its container information (titles, summaries) all in Spanish, but for moving image materials we record the main language based on the sound track. This set includes videos in many languages (including Spanish, but also Awa pit, Kichwa, Paicoca, Cha’palaa, Huao terero, Shuar, A’ingae, and Tsafiki), so I encoded the soundtrack as having multiple languages:

Lang: mul

I encoded the information about container and subtitles in the 041:

041 0_ ǂa mul ǂb spa ǂj eng ǂj fre ǂj spa

with a free text version in the language note:

546 __ ǂa Soundtrack in multiple languages with optional
subtitles in Spanish, English or French. Summaries in Spanish.

And quiet flows the vodka, or, When Pushkin comes to shove : the curmudgeon’s guide to Russian literature and culture, with the devil’s dictionary of received ideas, alphabetical reflection on the loathsomeness of Russia, American Academia, and humanity in general / Alicia Chudo ; edited by Andrew Sobesednikov. (OCLC #43540075)

The LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6.3 on Recording Variant Titles says: For titles proper that contain an “alternative title,” insure title access to the complete title proper (MARC field 245); to the first part of the title proper up to the word “or” or its equivalent in another language that signals an alternative title (MARC field 246); and to the part following the word “or” or its equivalent in another language (MARC field 246).“ For this title, this appears as:

245 10 ǂa And quiet flows the vodka, or, When Pushkin comes to
shove : ǂb the curmudgeon's guide to Russian literature and
culture, with the devil's dictionary of received ideas,
alphabetical reflection on the loathsomeness of Russia, American
Academia, and humanity in general / ǂc Alicia Chudo ; edited by
    Andrew Sobesednikov.
246 30 ǂa And quiet flows the vodka
246 30 ǂa When Pushkin comes to shove

ISBD punctuation for the title proper is described in ISBD 1.1.3.4

OLAC’s Best Practices for Cataloging DVD-Video and Blu-ray Discs Using RDA and MARC21 says that the narrator of a video should be recorded in the 511 field with first indicator 0 (so as not to generator a display constant “Cast:”):

511 0_ ǂa Narrated by David Ogden Stiers.

An access point may also be added, with the appropriate relationship designator:

700 1_ ǂa Stiers, David Ogden, ǂe narrator.

Issues in bilingualism and biculturalism : a Hong Kong case study / David C.S. Li. (OCLC #33820211)

This volume (and about 20 others) were due back to the library in 1999, but were just returned this week! They had long since been removed from the catalog (following our lost/missing books policy) so we are treating them as gifts to the library.

The branch where this volume was housed has recently done some aggressive weeding and other collection development, so we will make these volumes available to the selector, so she can choose whether we want to retain it.
