I was unable to determine if this was a Chinese translation of a previously published Peanuts book, or just a collection of translations of comics from 1971. I treated it like the latter (I couldn’t find a book with a title like “I would have made a good sheep dog!”), cuttering based on the Romanization of the title proper, which starts with “Wo ying gai shi …”

Also, I had to look up the syntax for parallel series statement, which I hadn’t done in recent memory:

Problem patron manual / compiled by Becky Croft, Geneva Pullen, Diana Seidel. (OCLC #13521606)

We came across this gem as an outlier in the catalog; our local record somehow had five or fewer variable fields, but did have an OCLC number and holdings representing an actual book on the shelf. (Also a subtle caption on the comic.) It now has a full OCLC record.

Next to its statement of challenged materials (“no challenged library materials should be removed from the library under any legal or extra legal pressure”), it includes a form which patrons can use to challenge books. It includes the thoughtful questions:

  1. To what in this book do you object? (be specific)
  2. What do you feel might be the result of reading this book?
  3. For what age group would you recommend this book?
  4. Is there anything good about the book?
  5. Did you read the entire book? (what parts?)
  6. Are you aware of the judgment of this book by literary critics?
  7. What do you believe is the theme of this book?
  8. What would you like the library to do about this book? (do not lend to my child, withdraw from all readers, send to staff for re-evaluation)
  9. In its place, what book of equal literary value would you recommend that would convey as valuable a picture and perspective of the subject treated?

Chronomanifestes 1950-2010 / Bernard Tschumi. (OCLC #871243007)

The phrase “Collection Frac Centre” appears many places on this exhibition catalog; which element should it be recorded in? This was a subject of debate at yesterday’s meeting!

The title page has “Chronomanifestes 1950-2010” in large letters in the center, and at the top in smaller letters has “Bernard Tschumi / Collection Frac Centre”. That would normally look like Bernard’s affiliation, but the preface says otherwise: he is an architect who curated this particular exhibit from that collection. So is it part of the statement of responsibility? Other title information?

We decided that it was neither of those, but included its authorized access point as a “sponsoring body”, explained in a quoted note from the preface. I did include it as other title information in a 246 in case anyone searched for it that way based on the cover.

明鑼移山 / 文・圖: 阿諾・羅北兒 ; 譯: 杨茂秀 (OCLC #36945691)

Despite being in Chinese and being set in ancient China, this is actually a translation of an English-language picture book, “Ming Lo moves the mountain” by Arnold Lobel, author of “Frog and Toad are friends”.

Many libraries would class this under PZ (Fiction and juvenile belles lettres) but our main branch doesn’t really collect in that area, so we avoid it when we can; I classed under the author’s number (PS3562.O18) and extended the title cutter to indicate Chinese translation. It does include the English version, but in the back, and with much smaller pictures, so I considered the Chinese to be primary.

夏綠蒂的網 = Charlotte’s web / 懷特 (E. B. White) 著；威廉斯 (Garth Williams) 圖；黃可凡譯. (OCLC #56323966)

In this Chinese edition of Charlotte’s Web, the illustrations of Charlotte’s words in the web (like “some pig”) are done with Chinese characters (something like 非凡豬, meaning “extraordinary pig”). Cute!

To build the call number, I took the call number for our existing copy of Charlotte’s web and extended using the Translation table to indicate a Chinese translation.

Los caminos a Roma / Fernando Vallejo. (OCLC #876723365)

I am often suspicious when a Spanish-language book comes to me needing a new record for this “edition”. Though its metadata may say it is the 35th “edición”, that usually refers to the printing, which does not require a new record on its own.

There were several records in OCLC for this work, but they weren’t quite similar enough. The verso gives a date for “Primera edición en esta Biblioteca”, referring to the new series it is being published under, which is a major enough difference for a new record. Pagination is also significantly different.

Mensonges d’États / Xavier Daugreilh ; mise en scène de Nicolas Briançon. (OCLC #859669542)

This play is no. 1351 of the series “Avant-scène. Théâtre”. The authority record for that series suggests classing together (PN2003: Drama, Periodicals, French). The branch that bought this volume has only a couple of others from that series, all classed separately. I followed this practice, classing the title as a separate work under the author’s class number (PQ2664.A78), and recorded this variation in our local authority file:

Now the title is more easily discoverable on the shelf among works by similar authors, and there is no stray call number ending in “no.1351”, leaving you wondering where the other volumes are.

RDA Tip of the Week: Supplied dates

When the date of publication is not found on the resource itself, you can indicate that in an RDA record with a statement like [Date of publication not identified] (RDA 2.8.2.6), but it is more helpful to supply a probable date or date range if you can. These are recorded in brackets with phrases like the ones in RDA 1.9.2:

   [2014]
   [2010?]
   [1951 or 1952]
   [between 1940 and 1980]
   [not after 1600]
   [not before 1982]

AACR2 (1.4F7) allowed the [between 1981 and 1993] construction, but only for dates fewer than 20 years apart.

Our first demand-driven acquisition (DDA) ebook purchase!

After three short-term loans, the next substantial viewing of this title triggered a purchase for our library. The patron likely had no idea that they just added a book to our collection!

After being notified of the purchase, we cataloged the title with an OCLC record (as we do our other ebooks) and removed the discovery record we had been using.
