Still running : the autobiography of Nate Northington, the first African American football player in the Southeastern Conference / Nathaniel Northington ; with La Monte McNeese. (OCLC #851416833)

Individual biographies in football are classed under GV939.A2-Z. The Classification Web description looks pretty normal, so it is tempting to cutter by the author’s name. Doing so would hide his autobiography under N, between biographies of him written by others. Why not put his first?

Though ClassWeb doesn’t mention it, “Individual Biography” numbers have a specific meaning for A2-A5, which (unless specified) is detailed in the Biography Table; this particular title should have second cutter A3 for Autobiographies, diaries, etc. putting it close to the front, where it belongs.

These two discs appear identical except for the running time; they even have the same DVD menu and credits as far as I can tell. From the invoice, I determined that one was the Film Festival version and the other was the Broadcast version, but I had to do some digging to figure out which was which, and make a new record for the one that was not in OCLC. (As one is an abridgement of the other, I’d consider them at least different expressions!)

This book had a full parallel title page, which was helpful, but meant that I had to also consult the ISBD standard.

RDA only specifies content: which elements to record, and in this case, the order of all instances of a specific element; for example, RDA 2.4.3.3 talks about all parallel statements of responsibility. We are doing our description in ISBD (display), so must check that standard for rules on ordering and punctuating the full paragraph.

The Oxford handbook of regulation / edited by Robert Baldwin, Martin Cave, Martin Lodge. (OCLC #435418068)

Why does the paperback record have a series statement that’s not on the piece, and an edition statement that’s never explicitly stated?

Doesn’t matter. The differences between the paperback and hardback are not major enough to justify a new OCLC record. We can just view this as a new printing, and use the (more popular and in some ways better matching) hardback record.

What happened to all of those catalog cards when we started using an ILS?

For our Special Collections, we kept them.  We are now making sure that all of the data from the stamps and hand-written notes are present in the (electronic) catalog before we forget what codes like “OCB” used to mean.

Русские : этнокультурная идентичность / отв. ред. И. В. Власова. (OCLC #867156047)

This one was a rush, and in Russian, no less! Cataloging Russian books can be tricky; not only do you get to type half of the description twice (once in transcribed Cyrillic, once Romanized) but there are also extra rules for subject analysis. (Thanks for the great explanation, Indiana!)

This particular title is about historical and contemporary ethnography, so gets a tripled heading.
