The title page of this piece says both “том второй” (volume 2)
and “издание третье” (third edition). Does this mean it is volume 2 of the third edition?
An OCLC record for a two-volume set clarifies the situation:
500 __ ǂa T. 1 is 4th ed. and t. 2 is 3rd ed.

We own two full sets of this title (each with 10 main volumes + 2 supplements); one is an original printing (title page says 1929) and one is a reprint from the 1980’s. They were on separate records (with one set’s supplements each on their own records) and used different classifications and enumerations. Their content was the same (and copies similar enough to be on the same record) so I wanted to bring them together, both in the catalog and on the shelf.
I cataloged both sets on the same record, each with their own holdings record. I modified the call number on the reprint (adding ‘b’ to the end) so that each set would be filed together as a whole, and so that the volumes would not be flagged as duplicates.

I am often suspicious when a Spanish-language book comes to me needing a new record for this “edition”. Though its metadata may say it is the 35th “edición”, that usually refers to the printing, which does not require a new record on its own.
There were several records in OCLC for this work, but they weren’t quite similar enough. The verso gives a date for “Primera edición en esta Biblioteca”, referring to the new series it is being published under, which is a major enough difference for a new record. Pagination is also significantly different.
