Could you put in a 246 with no abbreviations? Just curious 🙂

Good question! Yes, I think that would be fine.

The LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6.3 specifically recommends recording a variant title substituting the corresponding spelled-out form of the abbreviation (if it is thought that some catalog users might reasonably expect that the form was spelled out in the source) if the abbreviation occurs as one of the first five words of the Title proper.

Though these particular abbreviations appear later in the title, you could justify the 246 with the main instruction, which says “record variant titles that are considered important for identification or access”:

Therapy sessions : demonstrations / with John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman. (OCLC #900897868)

This DVD set had so many titles that I had a hard time selecting one for the Title proper.

The title screen on the first DVD (where I would normally look, following RDA 2.2.2.3) read “Scripts for marital therapy training”. This phrase did not appear on any of the other discs, so I was not sure it was a collective title, and not just a title for first disc.The label on the disc was similar to the container: “Therapy sessions: demonstrations”. The disc menu (on all discs) only has the title “Assessment & intervention”.

I selected the title from the container/disc label as it was the most prominent (it was also chosen for different editions) and used the others as variant titles:

245 00 Therapy sessions : demonstrations / ǂc with John Gottman
    and Julie Schwartz Gottman.

G. (OCLC #5466373)

I initially did not realize that the “G” on the spines of these volumes was the title of the serial, and not just some enumeration! The record has a variant title:

(seen on some pieces) which, while not much more specific, is at least longer.

I struggled with whether to include the bracket punctuation that appears in this title; the brackets do appear on the title page, but might be interpreted as saying that the content in them (“to construct by assembling diverse parts”, “an untruthful statement”) came from somewhere other than on the piece.

RDA 1.7.3 on Transcription of Punctuation says to transcribe punctuation as it appears on the source, and has examples including ellipses (…) which might cause similar confusion.

The brackets themselves will usually not affect searching (in many systems, they are ignored for word/phrase indexing), but I did include a variant title that only included only the words in the larger font:

The LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6.3 (Recording Variant Titles) mentions letters and initialisms (including acronyms). It says: When a series of letters or an initialism occurs as one of the first five words in a title proper with separating punctuation (hyphen, period, slash), make a variant title in the form without any separating punctuation if it is thought that some catalog users might expect that the letters would be recorded in that form in the source.

USA is a common way of writing U.S.A., so I recorded the variant title:

RDA 16.2.3.7 on Alternate Linguistic Form of Name includes the specific case that “if the name recorded as the preferred name begins with a number expressed as a word or contains a number expressed as a word, and numbers expressed as words are accessed differently from numbers expressed as numerals, record the form with the number expressed as an arabic numeral as a variant name.”

For this title, that would be:

This title has two abbreviations which can be recorded in a variant title, according to the LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6.3:

246 3_ ǂa Learn two-dimensional game development with C sharp

It may be bit excessive, as I don’t know how many budding game developers would search our catalog for “two-dimensional game development”. Also, though C# is not in the first five words of the title (the cut-off in the LC-PCC PS), C Sharp is an alternate spelling of C# and might be searched for by a patron who had only heard of the language, but not seen its name written.
