Chiral catalyst immobilization and recycling / edited by D.E. De Vos, I.F.J. Vankelecom, P.A. Jacobs. (OCLC #43970726)

This book was recently returned to the library, having been overdue since 2006! Following our missing/lost books policy, we purged the records from the catalog long ago; we had also not replaced the title in the meantime. A lost book is usually quite easy to add back to the collection; we are reasonably sure that there is a good record for it in OCLC, and the piece is still labeled and barcoded, so can be quickly copy cataloged and returned to the shelf.

未来の戦争 / 著者石ノ森章太郎, 小松左京, 星野之宣, 山上たつひこ, ひらまつつとむ, 諸星大二郎, 松本零士, 手塚治虫, 藤子・F・不二雄. (OCLC #834048126)

This compilation of manga about war includes comics by famous artists including Osamu Tezuka (of Astro Boy) and Keiji Nakazawa (of Barefoot Gen). I wanted to provide detailed access to the artists and subject areas in each volume, so analyzed the series (cataloged each on its own record). I also wanted them to sit together in order on the shelf, so classified them together as a collection under the series title, so volumes have call numbers like:

PN6790.J32 M38 2013 v.5

This appears in the series authority record as:

644 __ ‡a f ‡5 YOUNG
645 __ ‡a t ‡5 YOUNG
646 __ ‡a c ‡5 YOUNG

Engineering and scientific manpower in the United States, Western Europe and Soviet Russia. (OCLC #10996318)

My catalog’s record for the electronic resource abbreviates United States in the 245 $a:

Engineering and Scientific Manpower in the U.S.,
        Western Europe and Soviet Russia.

That seemed strange; it’s an AACR2 record, and though many things are abbreviated in AACR2, I didn’t remember this ever happening for title proper. Maybe they didn’t get the title from the cover?

A closer look at the record revealed this phrase as part of a note:

Record is based on bibliographic data in ProQuest U.S.
        Congressional Research Digital Collection

This was likely an input convention for that particular database, whose data was then crosswalked into (mostly) AACR2-style records.

I am undecided on whether this would be appropriate (if not ideal) under RDA. RDA 2.2.2.2 says that for ebooks, the title proper should be taken from the image of the title page, though one could argue for the alternative: when creating records in batch, the title page image is not readily available, and the metadata is permanently (!) affixed to that digital edition.

Is strict adherence to the “preferred” source of information preferable to quick record creation/availability? How important is the title proper of the manifestation if there is enough other data (e.g. SuDoc number) to link that manifestation with other versions of the expression/work?

Dismantling the bomb and managing the nuclear materials : summary. (OCLC #29195498)

The AACR2 record for this title includes the note:

    500 __ ǂa "September 1993"--P. [4] of cover.

which means that the quoted phrase appears on the cover on the back of the piece. The cover is logically paginated: 1 (front of front cover), 2 (back of front cover), 3 (inside of back cover), 4 (outside of back cover). Since the cover doesn’t actually have those page numbers printed on it, they are bracketed in the note.

In RDA, the LC-PCC policy statement for punctuation in notes says to not use square brackets in notes except when they are used in quoted data, so the RDA record would have this note:

    500 __ ǂa "September 1993"--P. 4 of cover.

Light everywhere : selected poems / Cees Nooteboom ; translated by David Colmer. (OCLC #859583862)

The title page has a Seagull books logo, and its verso lists two “publishing” roles:

  • Typeset by Seagull Books, Calcutta, India
  • Printed and bound by Maple Press, York, Pennsylvania, USA

I would have chosen Seagull books as the publisher (considering Maple Press to be more of a manufacturer) but the copy in OCLC says Maple Press. Variation in choice of publisher does not justify a new record, so I put our holdings on this record. I’d feel weird changing the record when it already has holdings, or having our local record not match on a major element (such things can cause problems when doing a reclamation) so I left the record as it is.

The handbook for quality management [electronic resource] : a complete guide to operational excellence / Thomas Pyzdek, Paul Keller. (OCLC #840106436)

When I initially cataloged this ebook, its link was:

http://accessengineeringlibrary.com/browse/the-handbook-for-quality-management-a-complete-guide-to-operational-excellence-second-edition

The ebook metadata has now changed to read “Handbook for quality management”, and the link has changed accordingly:

http://accessengineeringlibrary.com/browse/handbook-for-quality-management-a-complete-guide-to-operational-excellence-second-edition

I updated OCLC to reflect the change, but there are still holdings there! I am now posting such ebook link changes/or deaths on the new Zombie Ebooks tumblr.

Civilian space stations and the U.S. future in space. (OCLC #11477461)

(excerpt!)

Government documents are often available in multiple formats (print, electronic, microform). An older cataloging practice was to have a single bibliographic record representing the title in all formats (manifestations), but now we catalog each format on its own bibliographic record. In a FRBR or linked data environment where we are storing statements rather than pre-gathered records, there would be less of a distinction here.

Allylboration of carbonyl compounds / Dennis G. Hall and Hugo Lachance. (OCLC #775406307)

The catalog record for this monograph says that it was originally published as volume 73 of the serial title “Organic reactions”, though I didn’t find that anywhere on the piece! I checked our copy of volume 73, and found that indeed, their contents were nearly identical (except for updated references).

The selector wanted to keep both copies, so I cataloged this one as a separate monograph, using a note (not series statement/added entry) to record the relationship.

Policy papers : United States Senate Republican Policy Committee, one hundred and eighth Congress, first session / Jon Kyl, Chairman. (OCLC #54903735)

The catalog had only a shipping list record for this piece. Due to weirdness with an OCLC reclamation project, we also had our OCLC holdings set on a copy of that shipping list record! It is now fully cataloged.

Space architecture : buildings for the outer space / Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. (OCLC #880139534)

I worry about classifying any book that starts with “The mysteries of the Universe are yet to be unraveled.” The contents are broad, including a section on extraterrestrial buildings, but just as much space is given to the individual human senses as we should think about them when designing those buildings.

I ended up classing it with the Design Library’s other books on space architecture (which is different from Space (Architecture)!) under TL797 (Space stations).
