Мифологические рассказы русских крестьян XIX-ХХ вв / составление, подготовка текстов, вступительная статья и комментарии М.Н. Власовой.(OCLC #900161990)

RDA 3.4.5.2 on recording the extent of a Single Volume with Numbered Pages, Leaves, or Columns, says to “record the last numbered page, leaf, or column in each sequence and follow it with the appropriate term”. For this title, I recorded this:

300 __ ǂa 909 pages ; ǂc 24 cm

but noticed that the bibliography went from 909 to the following page. But how to reference that?

Under AACR2, this would have been simple:

504 __ ǂa Includes bibliographical references (p. 909-[910]).

RDA does not bracket unnumbered pages in notes, but it would have felt odd to refer to pages 909-910 when there were only 909 pages in the extent. I could have recorded the extent as “909 pages, 1 unnumbered page” but that would not have made the 504 clearer, so I just went with:

504 __ ǂa Includes bibliographical references.

The art & science of love : a weekend workshop for couples / created and presented by John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman. (OCLC #902814536)

These DVDs came as part of a box set that included manuals, separate information sheets, decks of cards, and a magnet. Though I could have considered the whole works to be a kit, I chose instead to consider the video primary, as it references and walks you through use of all the other materials. This is encoded using only the video information as the extent, with the rest of it considered accompanying materials:

300 __ ǂa 4 videodiscs (388 min.) : ǂb sound, color ; ǂc 4 3/4 in. +
    ǂe 2 manuals (89 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm) + 1 contact
    list (14 pages ; 28 cm) + 1 checklist (28 cm) + 1 booklet
    (10 pages ; 16 cm) + 7 card decks (9 x 6.5 cm) + 1 house
    magnet (10 x 9 cm)

I included content/media/carrier information for both the videos and the manuals, as they seemed the most important:

336 __ ǂa two-dimensional moving image ǂb tdi ǂ2 rdacontent
336 __ ǂa text ǂb txt ǂ2 rdacontent ǂ3 accompanying material
337 __ ǂa video ǂb v ǂ2 rdamedia
337 __ ǂa unmediated ǂb n ǂ2 rdamedia ǂ3 accompanying material
338 __ ǂa videodisc ǂb vd ǂ2 rdacarrier
338 __ ǂa volume ǂb nc ǂ2 rdacarrier ǂ3 accompanying material

The estate tax of 1926, as amended; the additional estate tax of 1932, as amended; the gift tax of 1932, as amended. Prepared for the use of the Committee on Ways and Means, House of Representatives. (OCLC #3835120)

The record for this title correctly reflects that the volume has 83 numbered pages:

300  iii, 83 pages ; ǂc 23 cm

but does not mention that it has just as many completely blank pages following that sequence. RDA 3.4.5.3.2 on Inessential Matter says to “disregard unnumbered sequences of inessential matter (advertising, blank pages, etc.).” I hope nobody is using pagination information as an indicator of book width!

Therapy sessions : demonstrations / with John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman. (OCLC #900897868)

This DVD set had so many titles that I had a hard time selecting one for the Title proper.

The title screen on the first DVD (where I would normally look, following RDA 2.2.2.3) read “Scripts for marital therapy training”. This phrase did not appear on any of the other discs, so I was not sure it was a collective title, and not just a title for first disc. The label on the disc was similar to the container: “Therapy sessions: demonstrations”. The disc menu (on all discs) only has the title “Assessment & intervention”.

I selected the title from the container/disc label as it was the most prominent (it was also chosen for different editions) and used the others as variant titles:

245 00 Therapy sessions : demonstrations / ǂc with John Gottman
and Julie Schwartz Gottman. 246 1_ ǂi Title on disc menu screens: ǂa Assessment & intervention 246 1_ ǂi Title on disc 1 opening title: ǂa Scripts for marital therapy

Do it the hard way; Rube Goldberg and modern times. (OCLC #111971)

This government document has a pop-up of a Rube Goldberg machine! It is a fairly simple one, similar to this noise-maker.

RDA does not specifically address pop-up or otherwise movable books, so I looked at LC’s guidelines for Toy and Moveable (T&M) books. Following those guidelines, I included a 500 note:

500 __ ǂa Includes pop-up illustration of a Rube Goldberg machine.

but as there was only only illustration like this, I did not go so far as to include the subject heading:

650 _0 ǂa Pop-up books ǂv Specimens.

Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. (OCLC #43026739)

This government document is a single sheet of paper, folded like a tri-fold brochure (and housed in an envelope to protect it).

RDA 3.4.5.14 on extent of Single Sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record the extent as 1 folded sheet followed by the number of pages laid out on the sheet, in parentheses.”

RDA 3.5.1.4.11 on dimensions of Single Sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record only the height of the sheet when folded” (as though it is a volume).

So for this document, the physical description is:

300 __ ǂa 1 folded sheet (6 pages) ; ǂc 22 cm

The future is now : the significance of precognition, by Arthur W. Osborn. (OCLC #492222)

RDA 2.8.1.4 on Recording Publication Statements says to transcribe places of publication and publishers’ names as they appear on the source of information. For this title, the Publisher’s Name would be recorded as “Theosophical Publishing House”. Under AACR2 (1.4D) the publisher would be recorded in the shortest form in which it can be understood and identified internationally, which in this case (depending on cataloger’s judgment) could be:

Theosophical Publishing House

Theosophical Pub. House

Theosophical Pub.

Theosophical

Fabrication [to construct by assembling diverse parts] and fabrication [an untruthful statement] / edited by Amit Wolf. (OCLC #880682694)

I struggled with whether to include the bracket punctuation that appears in this title; the brackets do appear on the title page, but might be interpreted as saying that the content in them (“to construct by assembling diverse parts”, “an untruthful statement”) came from somewhere other than on the piece.

RDA 1.7.3 on Transcription of Punctuation says to transcribe punctuation as it appears on the source, and has examples including ellipses (…) which might cause similar confusion.

The brackets themselves will usually not affect searching (in many systems, they are ignored for word/phrase indexing), but I did include a variant title that only included only the words in the larger font:

246 3_ ǂa Fabrication and fabrication

Practical applications of agricultural system models to optimize the use of limited water / Lajpat R. Ahuja, Liwang Ma, and Robert J. Lascano, editors. (OCLC #898368212)

RDA 2.8.4.5 on resources having more than one publisher says to record the publishers’ names in the order indicated by the sequence, layout, or typography of the names on the source of information, though the main rule indicates that in that case, only the first publisher is core.

For this resource, I decided to record all three :

264 _1 ǂa Madison, WI : ǂb American Society of Agronomy :
ǂb Crop Science Society of America :
ǂb Soil Science Society of America, ǂc [2014]

In [U]mbra : ǂb демонология как семиотическая система / ǂc ответственные редакторы и составители Д. И. Антонов, О. В. Христофорова. (OCLC #896742190)

Even on the title page, the U in the word “Umbra” is represented as some kind of animal; it is probably a demon, given the subject of the book.

RDA 1.7.5 on Symbols has an LC-PCC PS with instructions on handling symbols with an obvious spoken or written equivalent, which the picture of the demon has. I added a note about this detail:

500 __ ǂa On title page, "[U]" appears as a demon.
