Nerve : how a small Kentucky town led the fight to safely dismantle the world’s chemical weapons / a film by Ben Evans & the Kentucky Environmental foundation ; with music by Ben Sollee. (OCLC #937869675)

Which relationship designator should be used for the composer/performer of original music for a film, so often expressed in the credits as “music by”? I included that version in the Creation/Production Credits Note:

508 00 ǂa Directed and produced by Ben Evans; music by Ben Sollee.

But am a little bit nervous about my relationship designators for the authorized access point:

700 1_ ǂa Sollee, Ben, ǂe composer (expression), ǂe instrumentalist.

RDA I.3.1 defines composer (expression) as “A person … contributing to an expression by adding music to a work that originally lacked it, by composing new music to substitute for the original music, or by composing new music to supplement the existing music.” which seems accurate, but a bit off. Similar designators seem to refer specifically to musical works.

Molis chorisa [videorecording]. (OCLC #502990397)

(It’s a brand new year on a brand new system! But the cataloging problems keep coming…)

I identified the language on this DVD as Greek, but was not feeling confident about reading the flowery script or transliterating it. I was grateful to find a publisher number on the spine that I could search for using the Publisher number (mn:) field:

    mn: 582333

There’s no specific RDA element for this data other than Identifier for the Manifestation (RDA 2.15)). This particular Identifier for the Manifestation is recorded in MARC 028:

    028 01 ǂa 582333 ǂb Odeon

Some other identifiers for the manifestation also have their own specific MARC fields, such as ISBN (020) and ISSN (022).

Nuove curiosità storiche / Benedetto Croce. (OCLC #932131129)

This facsimile reprint has an added title page (for the new publisher), which is fortunate, as the included facsimile of the title page has part of the author’s name erased:

RDA 2.4.1.3 on recording statement of responsibility for facsimiles and reproductions says to record the statement or statements of responsibility relating to the facsimile or reproduction, so I got to use the correct version:

245 10 ǂa Nuove curiosità storiche / ǂc Benedetto Croce.

It also sayes to record any statement of responsibility relating to the original manifestation as a statement of responsibility of a related manifestation. I could have done so as described in RDA 27.1 but decided against it; as it actually is correct on the original piece (which I also have in hand).

The Tokyo trial : recollections and perspectives from China / editor, Center for the Tokyo Studies of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. (OCLC #931081068)

RDA 2.8.6.6 on what to do when the Date of Publication is not identified says to supply the date or approximate date of publication; there is no provision for recording a phrase like “[date of publication no identified]” or similar.

This volume had no date for publication, copyright, distribution, manufacture, and neither publisher mentions the book on the web site, so we looked to the content to determine an approximate date.

One of the chapters includes a brief biography of Ni Zhengyu including the fact that he passed away in 2003. This was the latest date we found, so we recorded it as:

[not before 2003]

Latina/os and World War II : mobility, agency, and ideology / edited by Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez and B.V. Olguín. (OCLC #861496984)

Though I don’t know a specific RDA rule recommending it, I like this cataloger’s choice of variant titles. The title proper is transcribed from the piece:

245 00 ǂa Latina/os and World War II : ǂb mobility, agency,
and ideology / ǂc edited by Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez and
    B.V. Olguín.

But two additional variant titles are given to help with discovery:

246 3 ǂa Latinas and World War II
246 3 ǂa Latinos and World War II

Historia natural de los cuentos de miedo : con referencia a géneros fronterizos / Rafael Llopis. (OCLC #857809392)

Edition statements need not be numbered; they may just be descriptive. In either case, according to RDA 2.5 on Edition Statements, they should be transcribed as they appear on the piece:

250 __ Nueva edición reducida y mejorada.

Повести о Куликовской битве / изд. подготовили М.Н. Тихомиров, В.Ф. Ржига, Л.А. Дмитриев. (OCLC #2728286)

RDA 3.4.5.5 on Misleading numbering describes cases where the numbering on the last page does not represent the total number in that sequence, and says not to correct it unless it gives a completely false impression of the extent of the resource. For example, this volume’s last page has the page number misprinted, so the extent should be recorded as:

51, that is, 511 pages

Construction industry productiviy [sic] : examining the effects of omitted varialbe [sic] bias in the census construction price index models / by Bryan David Dyer. (OCLC #664555550)

We cataloged this dissertation under AACR2, so indicated the misspellings in the title with [sic], as:

245 10 ǂa Construction industry productiviy [sic] : ǂb
examining the effects of omitted varialbe [sic] bias in
the census construction price index models / ǂc by Bryan
    David Dyer.

with the corrected versions in a variant title:

246 3_ ǂa Construction industry productivity : ǂb examining
the effects of omitted variable bias in the census construction
    price index models

RDA 2.3.1.4 on recording titles says to transcribe the title as it appears on the source of information. The rule’s exception for correcting obvious typographical errors only applies to serials and integrating resources, so for this title we’d still transcribe as it appears on the piece, without [sic]:

245 10 ǂa Construction industry productiviy : ǂb
examining the effects of omitted varialbe bias in
the census construction price index models / ǂc by Bryan
    David Dyer.

Introduction to numerical linear algebra and optimisation / Philippe G. Ciarlet with the assistance of Bernadette Miara and Jean-Marie Thomas for the exercises ; translated by A. Buttigieg. (OCLC #17301000)

Based on my initial search for this title (which did not return the best record), I wondered whether I could or should record a variant title which used the spelling “optimization” rather than “optimisation”.

The LC-PCC PS for 2.3.6.3 on Recording Variant Titles includes best practices for types of variant titles to record, including:

If a title proper contains data within the first five words for which there could be an alternate form that would be filed differently, make a variant title under that form if it is thought that some users of the catalog might reasonably expect that form.

As “optimisation” is the seventh word, I did not include a variant title in the record, and will count on the discovery layer to provide any extra access.

To provide for the advancement of Rear Admiral Emory S. Land, Construction Corps, United States Navy, retired, to the rank of vice admiral (H.R. 7576). Mr. Vinson of Georgia. (OCLC #925380358)

RDA A.11.5 on Titles Following a Name or Used Alone in Place of a Name has a section on Civil and Military Titles which says not to capitalize a civil or military title.

RDA A.11.3 on Titles Preceding the Name says to capitalize any title or term of honour or address that immediately precedes a personal name.

Both forms appear in this title:

245 10 ǂa To provide for the advancement of Rear Admiral
Emory S. Land, Construction Corps, United States Navy, retired,
to the rank of vice admiral (H.R. 7576).
