Aurelio : rebel with a cause / Modern Legacies presents a documentary by Camilo Vila ; produced by Kert Vander Meulen, Henry Vargas, Camilo Vila ; directed by Camilo Vila ; executive producers Orlando Jiménez Leal, Gilberto de Cárdenas, Eduardo Palmer. (OCLC #904341145)

I cataloged this DVD using the new DVD/Blu-Ray best practices guide from OLAC.

Though recording performers, narrators and presenters is not required, I most enjoyed recording this cast list:

511 1_ ǂa Joseph Cordieri (Aurelio the music student), Alexandre
Mangin (Aurelio as a child), Norman Smith (Igor Stravinsky),
Henry Vargas (Chauffeur), Fabiola Robaina (nun).

Deep veils : Erik L’Heureux and Pencil Office / Erik L’Heureux and Grit Vltavsky. (OCLC #880198268)

This volume is oddly sized and bound. The white part is the cover, wrapped around the larger beige signatures; you can see page number “1” poking over the top. There are also about 15 (double-sided) sheets of different sizes tipped in throughout the book that are unnumbered (no space left in the page sequence), so I guess they are plates? Many of the numbered pages have only illustrations, and some smaller pages have only text; not how I usually think of plates, but I think they qualify.

RDA 5.5.1.4.14 on the dimension of volumes mentions the situation where the volume contains separate text blocks of varying dimensions (which is not precisely this case); it says in that case to record the height (or height × width) of the binding only – I think the spirit of this instruction is to record the dimension of the carrier, which is what is recorded in the copy I found:

21 cm

I mentioned the odd plate sizing in a note for identification purposes:

500 __ ǂa Plates of different sizes, smaller than numbered pages.

so I also included the plates, as they are mentioned in a note, per RDA 3.4.5.9.

La obra completa / Mateo Alemán ; Pedro M. Piñero Ramírez y Katharina Niemeyer (directores) (OCLC #897118689)

RDA 6.2.2.10.1 on Complete Works says that such works should get the conventional collective title Works as their preferred title, which in MARC looks like:

240 10 ǂa Works

The Title Proper (associated with the particular manifestation) is also recorded:

245 13 ǂa La obra completa / ...

Convertibility of space and defense resources to civilian needs : a search for new employment potentials / compiled for the Subcommittee on Employment and Manpower of the Committee on Labor and Public Welare, United States Senate. (OCLC #28090162)

This resource is the second volume of a set that is continuously paged. RDA 3.4.5.7 on Pages, Etc., Numbered as Part of a Larger Sequence says to. record the first and last numbers of the pages, as in:

pages 587-1106

This volume also has pre-pages numbered with Roman numerals. If it had only those pages, the extent would be recorded:

vii pages

but I don’t see an example for combining these two forms. It seems reasonable to do:

vii pages, pages 587-1106

but the cataloger who made this copy chose the format:

vii, pages 587-1106

which is also clear.

For honor, glory & union : the Mexican and Civil War letters of Brig. Gen. William Haines Lytle / Ruth C. Carter, editor. (OCLC #897380031)

I often hear the generalization “don’t use abbreviations in RDA”, but this mainly refers to non-transcribed elements which under AACR2 would have had abbreviations, like “39 p.” (for 39 pages) or “ca.” (for approximately).

For this resource, several abbreviations appear in the Title (a transcribed field), so they are recorded as they appear on the resource:

245 10 ǂa For honor, glory & union : ǂb the Mexican and
Civil War letters of Brig. Gen. William Haines Lytle /
    ǂc Ruth C. Carter, editor.

But could you include the unabbreviated version as a variant title?

Commentationes historicae : almae matri Studiorum Bononiensi novem saecula feliciter celebranti ab Universitate Iagellonica Cracoviensi oblatae. (OCLC #19366330)

RDA 3.4.5.9 on Leaves or Pages of Plates gives instructions for recording these in Extent, BUT also includes the instruction to disregard unnumbered sequences of plates unless they are substantial or referred to in a note. In most books, I see short blocks of unnumbered plates scattered throughout the book, and disregard these in RDA records.

This particular title has a block of numbered plates after the main numbered sequence, so gets

300 __ ǂa 282 pages, 31 pages of plates : ǂb illustrations ; ǂc 25 cm.

Those plates are also represented with an f in the Ills fixed field:

До основ : збірник статей у шістдесятліття Української вільної академії наук у Канаді, 1949-2009 = To the source : essays on the sixtieth anniversary of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Canada, 1949-2009 / редактори Юрій Книш, відповідальний, Ярослав Розумний, україномовний, Орест Цап, англомовний .(OCLC #829793942)

Place of Publication is a transcribed element in RDA, so is recorded with the language and script it appears in on the piece. For this Ukrainian title, that is:

Вінніпеґ

or in its transliterated form:

Vinnipeg

If one did a simple search for all titles published in Winnipeg, they’d be out of luck finding this one, though it would turn up in a fixed field Ctry search for Manitoba:

Ctry: mbc

Сталинградская битва / А.М. Самсонов. (OCLC #19833387)

Under AACR2, edition statements had specific abbreviations to be used for English words like “First” and “Edition”, and also for words in other languages and alphabets, like “издание” and “исправленный”, detailed in Appendix B.

While this was nice and short for catalog cards, this abbreviation coupled with romanization makes edition statements more difficult to recognize when copy cataloging if you are not familiar with the language. For example, this title has the edition statment “Четвертое издание, исправленное и дополненное” which is recorded in the AACR2 copy as:

250 __ ǂa 4-e izd., ispr. i dop.

Under RDA, the Edition Statement is transcribed fully as it appears on the piece, and also in the same language/script (unless the alternative to RDA 1.4 is followed), requiring fewer look-ups in original cataloging and making copy easier to recognize.

Synopsis of benefits available to veterans and their dependents. (OCLC #903217739)

RDA 3.5.1.4.11 on recording Dimensions of sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record only the height of the sheet when folded.” Though the rule is no more specific than that, I chose to apply another rule for volumes (which this piece appears to be, but only technically is not):

RDA 3.5.1.4.14 on recording the Dimensions of volumes says to record only the height of the volume (in cm or mm as appropriate), unless the width of the volume is either less than half the height or greater than the height, in which case both are recorded. For this volume, that would be:

19 x 7 cm

and in the MARC:

300 __ ǂa 1 folded sheet (13 pages) ; ǂc 19 x 7 cm

problem-cataloger:

Мифологические рассказы русских крестьян XIX-ХХ вв / составление, подготовка текстов, вступительная статья и комментарии М.Н. Власовой.(OCLC #900161990)

RDA does not bracket unnumbered pages in notes, but it would have felt odd to refer to pages 909-910 when there were only 909 pages in the extent. I could have recorded the extent as “909 pages, 1 unnumbered page” but that would not have made the 504 clearer, so I just went with:

504 __ ǂa Includes bibliographical references.

frakcancer asked for clarification on why deduced information would not be bracketed in a note. My post overstated this; this is not an RDA rule, but rather from the LCC-PS for RDA 1.7.1 (Transcription), which says “Do not use square brackets in notes except when they are used in quoted data.” So if you are following those policy statements, supplied page numbers in the bibliographical references note should not bracketed. Thanks for asking! 🙂
