Witchcraft / by Charles Alva Hoyt ; [edited by Beatrice R. Moore]. (OCLC #6862966)

This expression exists in two manifestations: the print volume we had in hand, and an electronic version at Google Books and HathiTrust (search only).

In MARC, the link between manifestations is recorded in the “additional physical form” field, 776:

776 08 ǂi Online version: ǂa Hoyt, Charles Alva. ǂt Witchcraft.

Sane occultism, by Dion Fortune. (OCLC #466116)

MARC 010 holds the Library of Congress control number (LCCN), but bibliography numbers assigned by other national agencies are recorded in 015.

For example, this record has an LCCN:

010 __ ǂa 68134885

but also a number from the British National Bibliography:

015 __ ǂa B68-18038

though if you look at its record in that bibliography, the identifier is formatted differently:

GB6818038

The techniques of astral projection : dénouement after fifty years. (OCLC #7303468)

OCLC has records using many standards; not just RDA and AACR2 but also some non-ISBD. For example, this record has fixed field Desc indicating that it is non-ISBD:

Desc: _

and indeed, some fields have no (or little) punctuation as markup:

300 __ ǂa xxiii, 111 pages ǂc 22 cm

but some elements have been upgraded over the time through OCLC’s automated processes (note that “p.” above has become “pages”). Some RDA elements have been added:

336 __ ǂa text ǂb txt ǂ2 rdacontent
  337 __ ǂa unmediated ǂb n ǂ2 rdamedia
338 __ ǂa volume ǂb nc ǂ2 rdacarrier

as have FAST headings:

  650 _7 ǂa Astral projection. ǂ2 fast ǂ0 (OCoLC)fst00819371

but the record as a whole has not been upgraded to RDA (not even to non-ISBD RDA) so is still considered a hybrid.

A history of blacks in Kentucky. Volume 2, In pursuit of equality, 1890-1980 / by George C. Wright. (OCLC #897141513)

When I have only one volume of a set in hand, I prefer to catalog on copy for the set when I can. Even with a good set record available that we could have derived from, I was not sure that we would eventually also have electronic access to the first volume, so we chose to make this record for the second volume only. In such a record, the volume number and name are encoded as part of the Title Proper:

245 12 ǂa A history of blacks in Kentucky. ǂn Volume 2,
ǂp In pursuit of equality, 1890-1980 / ǂc by George C. Wright.

Aurelio : rebel with a cause / Modern Legacies presents a documentary by Camilo Vila ; produced by Kert Vander Meulen, Henry Vargas, Camilo Vila ; directed by Camilo Vila ; executive producers Orlando Jiménez Leal, Gilberto de Cárdenas, Eduardo Palmer. (OCLC #904341145)

I cataloged this DVD using the new DVD/Blu-Ray best practices guide from OLAC.

Though recording performers, narrators and presenters is not required, I most enjoyed recording this cast list:

511 1_ ǂa Joseph Cordieri (Aurelio the music student), Alexandre
Mangin (Aurelio as a child), Norman Smith (Igor Stravinsky),
Henry Vargas (Chauffeur), Fabiola Robaina (nun).

Deep veils : Erik L’Heureux and Pencil Office / Erik L’Heureux and Grit Vltavsky. (OCLC #880198268)

This volume is oddly sized and bound. The white part is the cover, wrapped around the larger beige signatures; you can see page number “1” poking over the top. There are also about 15 (double-sided) sheets of different sizes tipped in throughout the book that are unnumbered (no space left in the page sequence), so I guess they are plates? Many of the numbered pages have only illustrations, and some smaller pages have only text; not how I usually think of plates, but I think they qualify.

RDA 5.5.1.4.14 on the dimension of volumes mentions the situation where the volume contains separate text blocks of varying dimensions (which is not precisely this case); it says in that case to record the height (or height × width) of the binding only – I think the spirit of this instruction is to record the dimension of the carrier, which is what is recorded in the copy I found:

21 cm

I mentioned the odd plate sizing in a note for identification purposes:

500 __ ǂa Plates of different sizes, smaller than numbered pages.

so I also included the plates, as they are mentioned in a note, per RDA 3.4.5.9.

Восточно-Померанская наступательная операция советских войск, февр.-март 1945 г. : ǂb военно-исторический очерк / ǂc А.С. Завялов, Т.Е. Калядин. (OCLC #10200562)

I did find an individual record for this small atlas, but I noticed that a copy of the resource that it typically accompanies is already in our collection. Rather than catalog the atlas separately, I added an additional mfhd to our main record:

La obra completa / Mateo Alemán ; Pedro M. Piñero Ramírez y Katharina Niemeyer (directores) (OCLC #897118689)

RDA 6.2.2.10.1 on Complete Works says that such works should get the conventional collective title Works as their preferred title, which in MARC looks like:

240 10 ǂa Works

The Title Proper (associated with the particular manifestation) is also recorded:

245 13 ǂa La obra completa / ...

Alfred : the first Continental flagship, 1775-1778 / John J. McCusker. (OCLC #446066)

The Name/Title derived search in OCLC can be done in the command line search by entering the first four letters of the author’s name and the first four letters of the title, separated by a comma. This is sometimes called a 4,4 search, and can be explicitly used using the nd: index.

There’s a surprising detail about this index (and other derived indexes involving names) which is that if the name starts with Mc or Mac followed by a capital letter (like McCusker), that Mc or Mac is only represented as “m” in the search. So the name/title derived search that would retrieve the above title is:

Epistolae Karolini aevi. IV / hrsg von E.L. Dümmler, Ernst Perels. (OCLC #810904180)

This series is so large and complicated (and being purchased slowly over time and out of order) that I keep a copy of its index at my desk with my other cataloging tools, along with our local plan for how we will assign the call numbers for the various volumes. This saves us a lot of “volume 4 of what?-style headaches!

This particular volume is volume IV of Epistolae Karolini, and volume 6 of Monumenta Germaniae historica Epistolae, so we give it the call number:
