Using a specific date to limit your search may be quick, but may make limit your search too strongly. If your title is a later part of a set (which may not be obvious), the date on the title page may not be the same as the date on the set record (probably the date of its first volume). For example, this volume had 1990 on its title page, but is a volume of a set whose publication started in 1989.

If you need to narrow by date, try starting with a date range, like:

Be wary of drawings that appear near the title – is that a decoration, or a decorative first letter?

In this case, the man’s throne is large letter Д which makes the first word “drevnerusskoe” not “revnerusskoe”, which may affect searching for copy cataloging.

One difficulty in cataloging foreign-language materials (or older materials where orthography has since changed) is identifying boundaries between words. Even if you know the correct letters to type, you must have spaces between them to be able to search effectively!

That bottom block of text consists of 13 words – can you tell where the boundaries are? (Fortunately the title page is clearer!)

If you’re unfamiliar with the words in a language, it may also be difficult to recognize punctuation and word boundaries. This title’s first two lines form a single word:

Нижегородские

separated on the page with a fancy hyphen. The word is not typically hyphenated (so is not transcribed that way into the record) so for copy cataloging you must search for the full form “nizhegorodskie” rather than a separated version like “nizhegorod skie” or even “nizhegorod-skie”.

The preface of this book includes the information in this record’s 500 note:

500 __ ǂa "The lecture, 'Religion and life,' ... was 
    delivered in German at Essex Hall, London, on Wednesday,
    7 June, 1911"--Preface.

Though I’m confident that I’m holding the resource cataloged in the record I found, I disagree with the cataloger’s inclusion of the series statement and added-entry:

490 1_ ǂa [The Essex Hall lecture ; ǂv 1911]
830 _0 ǂa Essex Hall lecture ; ǂv 1911.

as that series authority is for a specific series published by a different publisher. I checked another volume of the series online and confirmed that it is a series that looks a specific way, not just confusion over publisher vs. manufacturer.

I put our holdings on that record, but did not include the series information locally, allowing the note to describe its inclusion in the lecture series, but not the bibliographic series.

Sobranie sochineniĭ v semi tomakh / Marina T︠S︡vetaeva ; [sostavlenie, podgotovka teksta i kommentarii Anny Saaki︠a︡nt︠s︡ i Lʹva Mnukhina]. (OCLC #39019008)

Volumes of collected works may be more prominently decorated with the author’s name, which may not be recorded in the title field at all. This creates a challenge in copy cataloging of foreign language materials; if you don’t recognize “Marina Tsvetaeva” as a name, or don’t yet know that “Sobranie sochinenii” means “collected works”, what seems like the obvious search query may not retrieve the best (or any) records.

If you’re not finding copy for what appears to be a commonly available book, try multiple searches before giving up.

Сталинградская битва / А.М. Самсонов. (OCLC #19833387)

Under AACR2, edition statements had specific abbreviations to be used for English words like “First” and “Edition”, and also for words in other languages and alphabets, like “издание” and “исправленный”, detailed in Appendix B.

While this was nice and short for catalog cards, this abbreviation coupled with romanization makes edition statements more difficult to recognize when copy cataloging if you are not familiar with the language. For example, this title has the edition statment “Четвертое издание, исправленное и дополненное” which is recorded in the AACR2 copy as: 

250 __ ǂa 4-e izd., ispr. i dop.

Under RDA, the Edition Statement is transcribed fully as it appears on the piece, and also in the same language/script (unless the alternative to RDA 1.4 is followed), requiring fewer look-ups in original cataloging and making copy easier to recognize.

Though many people do DVD copy cataloging based only on the container, I have better luck finding good records, especially for foreign language materials, viewing the title frames of the DVD. Some days this means I get to watch the first few minutes of every Korean film in the box, which is a bonus.

This particular item says “Pan negro” on the container, but “Pa negre” in the title frames. Both forms of the title are in the high-quality record I found, but only “Pa negre” appears in its Title column in OCLC search results. One could have found the best/popular record by searching “pan negro”, but would have to be careful to not ignore the other form in search results (keeping in mind that translations may look significantly different).

I was slightly alarmed when I saw the cover of this book – what script is that?

Fortunately (a) the title page includes the title in Cyrillic, (b) our fabulous Russian selector had already identified a good OCLC record, and © he also pointed me to this resource which includes information about Mongolian transcription. Though I’m not familiar with Mongolian, given those three elements, I was able to copy catalog this title with confidence.

Invincibility of the liberation movement / Boris Ponomarev. (OCLC #16541895)

An OCLC record very closely matched the piece I had in hand; the only difference was that it had 37 pages, where the 300 ǂa said “27 pages”. Had there been other differences I would have thought the record represented a distinct item, but I followed the guidance on when to create a new record:

Differences indicative of a distinct bibliographic item usually occur in more than one field. If a difference occurs in a single field, determine whether there are two separate bibliographic items with only one significant difference or whether the difference is an error or a difference in opinion. If in doubt, use the existing record.

The font used for page numbers is pretty thick, so I can see how the cataloger could have made this mistake. I corrected the master record and added our holdings.
