Freedom and equality in a liberal democratic state / Jasper Doomen. (OCLC #876898821)

The author of this title contacted our reference desk to alert us that our catalog record not only misrepresented the item as his thesis for the degree of Doctor Iuris (which does not exist in the Netherlands), and also that the word “equality” was spelled incorrectly!

The copy we’d brought in from OCLC had since been corrected, so we were able to quickly fix our own catalog record (and will fix the spelling on the spine as well).

National Palace Museum of Korea : Gyeongbokgung, National Museum / Lambert M. Surhone, Mariam T. Tennoe, Susan F. Henssonow (Ed.). (OCLC #862364048)

A while back, this and one other compilation of Wikipedia articles came through our gifts process. As this is material that is freely available online, I asked the selector to confirm that she’d like them added to the collection; today I heard back that she did want them added, so they are now cataloged. I was able to find good copy for both with at least a few holdings, so some other libraries are adding these to their print collections as well.

Повѣсть о горѣ и злочстіи как горе злочастие довело молотца во иноческіи чин. (OCLC #54877225)

One difficulty in cataloging foreign-language materials (or older materials where orthography has since changed) is identifying boundaries between words. Even if you know the correct letters to type, you must have spaces between them to be able to search effectively!

That bottom block of text consists of 13 words – can you tell where the boundaries are? (Fortunately the title page is clearer!)

El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha : (1608) / por Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra ; [con prólogo de Fredo Arias de la Canal]. (OCLC #793608594)

RDA 3.4.5.5 on Misleading Numbering says: when the numbering on the last page gives a completely false impression of the extent of the resource, record the numbering as it appears on the last page followed by that is and the correct number. The pages in this resource have content are both sides, but only the leaves are numbered, so its physical description is:

300 __ ǂa xviii, 277, that is, 554 pages ; ǂc 22 cm

Nizhegorodskie dokumenty XVI [i.e. shestnadt︠s︡atogo] veka : (1588-1600 gg.) / G.N. Anpilogov. (OCLC #3459594)

If you’re unfamiliar with the words in a language, it may also be difficult to recognize punctuation and word boundaries. This title’s first two lines form a single word:

Нижегородские

separated on the page with a fancy hyphen. The word is not typically hyphenated (so is not transcribed that way into the record) so for copy cataloging you must search for the full form “nizhegorodskie” rather than a separated version like “nizhegorod skie” or even “nizhegorod-skie”.

Girl talk : boys, bullies and body image / Carol Langlois. (OCLC #898168325)

Due to a recently added workflow, I got to assign a Dewey number today, which I’d not done in about four years! The structure of this one is:

  • 305 – Groups of people
  • 305.235 – Young people twelve to twenty
  • 305.2352 – Females

In MARC, I encoded this as:

082 04 ǂa 305.235/2 ǂ2 23

In our collection, we’re using the call number:

J305.235 LAN

Ulozhenie Timura / redaktor Raʺno Azimova. (OCLC #31206018)

The statement of responsibility is recorded as it appears on the piece, where terms describing the role are generally in the language of the resource:

245 00 ǂa Ulozhenie Timura / ǂc redaktor Raʺno Azimova.

It may also not be consistent within a given language, or may not be stated explicitly at all. The type of role can be normalized using a relationship designator term with the authorized access point:

700 1_ ǂa Azimova, Raʺno, ǂe editor.

Sayatly Hemra. (OCLC #222812086)

I keep my cataloging statistics in a database (entered via a web form), and include only brief details such as format, branch location, original vs. copy cataloging, and also language of the material.

I’m always tickled when I get to add a new language to my form; today I got to add Turkmen!
