The interpretation of cultures : selected essays / by Clifford Geertz. (OCLC #44600588)

Before looking closely at this book, I thought it might be a duplicate of another title in our collection, as most metadata matched, including title, author, publisher and copyright date. Turning a few pages revealed a “preface to the 2000 edition”. RDA 2.5.2.2 on Sources of Information for the Edition Statement says that if there is no edition statement on the same source as the title proper (there isn’t), it can be taken from another source within the resource itself, so we have it recorded as:

250 __ ǂa 2000 edition.

El día que España derrotó a Inglaterra : de cómo Blas de Lezo, tuerto, manco y cojo, defendió el Imperio español en América / Pablo Victoria. (OCLC #941791257)

RDA 3.5.2.6 on recording the Dimensions of Map, Etc., on Folded Sheet says that if
the sheet itself contains a panel or section designed to appear on the outside when the sheet is folded, then record the dimensions of the map, etc., and add the dimensions of the sheet in folded form, preceded by a comma. This resource has such a map folded up in the back, so I have recorded its dimensions this way in the physical description:

300 __ ǂa 351 pages : ǂb color illustrations, color maps ;
    ǂc 24 cm + 1 map (91 x 63 cm, folded to 24 x 17 cm).

Medusa. (OCLC #938622762)

This title has a collective title, but also contains two individual works (previously published separately) by different authors. The collective title and the titles of the individual works are present on the title page. ISBD 1.1.4.3 describes this case, and says to choose the collective title as the title proper, and that titles of individual works may be given in Area 7. I followed that instruction:

245 10 ǂa Medusa.
505 00 ǂt Narrative of a voyage to Senegal in 1816 / ǂr J. B.
Henry Savigny & Alexander Correard -- ǂt The sufferings of
the Picard family after the shipwreck of the Medusa / ǂr
Charlotte-Adélaïde Dard [née Picard] ; translated
    by Patrick Maxwell.

I also included authorized access points as analytical entries for the two works:

700 12 ǂa Savigny, Jean Baptiste Henri, ǂd 1793-1843.
ǂt Naufrage de la frigate la Méduse. ǂl English.
700 12 ǂa Dard, Charlotte-Adelaïde. ǂt Chaumière africain.
    ǂl English.

I also liked the classification of this piece:

    G530.M5 S3313 2008

G530 is for individual accounts of shipwrecks including sailors’ yarns; for special vessels, cutter by the name of the vessel!

Nerve : how a small Kentucky town led the fight to safely dismantle the world’s chemical weapons / a film by Ben Evans & the Kentucky Environmental foundation ; with music by Ben Sollee. (OCLC #937869675)

Which relationship designator should be used for the composer/performer of original music for a film, so often expressed in the credits as “music by”? I included that version in the Creation/Production Credits Note:

508 00 ǂa Directed and produced by Ben Evans; music by Ben Sollee.

But am a little bit nervous about my relationship designators for the authorized access point:

700 1_ ǂa Sollee, Ben, ǂe composer (expression), ǂe instrumentalist.

RDA I.3.1 defines composer (expression) as “A person … contributing to an expression by adding music to a work that originally lacked it, by composing new music to substitute for the original music, or by composing new music to supplement the existing music.” which seems accurate, but a bit off. Similar designators seem to refer specifically to musical works.

Molis chorisa [videorecording]. (OCLC #502990397)

(It’s a brand new year on a brand new system! But the cataloging problems keep coming…)

I identified the language on this DVD as Greek, but was not feeling confident about reading the flowery script or transliterating it. I was grateful to find a publisher number on the spine that I could search for using the Publisher number (mn:) field:

    mn: 582333

There’s no specific RDA element for this data other than Identifier for the Manifestation (RDA 2.15)). This particular Identifier for the Manifestation is recorded in MARC 028:

    028 01 ǂa 582333 ǂb Odeon

Some other identifiers for the manifestation also have their own specific MARC fields, such as ISBN (020) and ISSN (022).

From zero to puberty and other life stories : tales, confessions, and musings of a baby boomer / T.J. Donnelly. (OCLC #930875033)

I quickly assigned a subject heading to this title:

650 _0 ǂa Baby boom generation ǂv Biography.

but struggled to find a good call number. Often classes of people have a subclass; for example:

  • QD – Chemistry
  • QD21 – Biography of chemists (collective)
  • QD22 – Biography of chemists (individual)

There are also ranges for biographies of people associated with various locations (for example, F450 for Kentucky) but this author has lived in at least Kentucky, Michigan, Colorado, and Nevada.

I also assigned a form subdivision for –Humor to bring out that aspect

650 _0 ǂa Baby boom generation ǂv Humor.

which led me to a better call number, PN6231.B22 (Wit and humor, Special topics A-Z, Baby boom generation) which in LC’s catalog contained many similar books. I cuttered by author to get:

    090 __ ǂa PN6231.B22 ǂb F76 2015

Nuove curiosità storiche / Benedetto Croce. (OCLC #932131129)

This facsimile reprint has an added title page (for the new publisher), which is fortunate, as the included facsimile of the title page has part of the author’s name erased:

RDA 2.4.1.3 on recording statement of responsibility for facsimiles and reproductions says to record the statement or statements of responsibility relating to the facsimile or reproduction, so I got to use the correct version:

245 10 ǂa Nuove curiosità storiche / ǂc Benedetto Croce.

It also sayes to record any statement of responsibility relating to the original manifestation as a statement of responsibility of a related manifestation. I could have done so as described in RDA 27.1 but decided against it; as it actually is correct on the original piece (which I also have in hand).

Irish Yankee : an Irish immigrant’s journals of service in the U.S. military 1916-1919 / by Thomas J. Kirk ; transcribed and annotated by Terrence R. Tingle. (OCLC #931693702)

Though Thomas J. Kirk died in 1951 (many years before the publication of his journals), he is still considered their author (a creator):

100 1_ ǂa Kirk, Thomas J., ǂe author.

His grandson, Terrence R. Tingle, who transcribed and annotated those journals, is considered their editor (a contributor):
