Istorii︠a︡ grazhdanskoĭ voĭny i intervent︠s︡ii v SSSR : sovremennai︠a︡ burzhuaznai︠a︡ istoriografii︠a︡ / V.P. Naumov, A.A. Kosakovskiĭ. (OCLC #26511741)

Subfield ǂa of 050 is repeatable, and I often see this feature used for titles in a series. For example:

050 04 ǂa D410 ǂb .N652 1976, no. 11 ǂa DK265.9.H5

The first call number should be used if you class the series together under one call number:

D410 .N652 1976, no. 11

(That’s D410 for 20th century periodicals, cuttered on the romanized name of the series: Novoe v zhizni, nauke, tekhnike. Serii︠a︡ “Istorii︠a︡”)

The second class number is provided for those who class the series separately, with a specific call number for each volume. In this case, that is:

DK265.9.H5

(History of Russia, Revolution, 1917-1921, Historiography). Subfield ǂb is not repeatable, so no item number is provided.

We class this series separately, so I used the second class number, adding a cutter for the author, Naumov:

090 ǂa DK265.9.H5 ǂb N37 1976

Percepción y variación lingüística : enfoque sociocognitivo / Rocío Caravedo. (OCLC #894227744)

When classifying this title, I assigned the class number P120.V37 (variation in language) followed by a cutter for the main entry (Caravedo). Just following the Cutter table from the Subject Cataloging Manual on Shelflisting, I would have assigned the cutter C37:

  • C as the first letter of Caravedo
  • 3 for the letter a following an initial consonant
  • 7 for expansion, as the next letter r is between p-s

CI browsed Library of Congress’s catalog in the area of P120.V37 C and spotted a similar title with call number P120.V37 C37 1997, with the second cutter based on the main entry Caro. I shifted that cutter slightly for the title in hand, so that it would file correctly, with Caravedo before Caro:

    P120.V37 C36 2014

Cortázar y París : Último round / Izara Batres. (OCLC #879865498)

This book is about another book: Ultimo round / Julio Cortazar. In a FRBR environment, we could link these related works with designators such as described in/description of, but in MARC records, we record this relationship with subject headings:

600 10 ǂa Cortázar, Julio. ǂt Último round
600 10 ǂa Cortázar, Julio ǂx Criticism and interpretation.

The free-floating subdivision “Criticism and interpretation” is only for use under people, so we must use both headings to record the criticism aspect and the specific title.

The call number for a commentary on an individual work is constructed by appending ‘3’ to the last cutter in the call number for the original work, in this case:

    PQ7797.C7145 U43 2014

Pele / Rod Smith. (OCLC #785823200)

In OCLC copy, this reader about Pelé was initially classed under GV942.7: Soccer, individual biographies. We bought many books in this Penguin series, and classed them in the same area so they could be easily browsed in our collection.

From what we found in copy for other titles in the series, many libraries had this same idea, but made different decisions on what that classification should be, including: (our decision bolded)

  • PE1121 – intermediate and advanced readers
  • PE1126.A4 – readers for adults
  • PE1126.N43 – readers for new literates
  • PE1128 – general textbooks for foreign speakers

Ionic channels of excitable membranes / Bertil Hille. (OCLC #10755486)

This gift book was already labeled with a call number that didn’t quite look like a Library of Congress call number. It was in the copy we found as a National Library of Medicine call number:

060 __ ǂa QH 601 ǂb H651i 1984

We re-labeled with a Library of Congress call number, which was quite similar:

050 00 ǂa QH601 ǂb .H55 1984

The two classifications are similar enough that in our collection, we do have some titles with NLM call numbers assigned, but interfiled with the LC collections.

Cotton flour bag (sack) towels : a recorded voluntary standard of the trade. (OCLC #890720497)

Cataloging commercial standards creates a fun opportunity to look up subject headings I’ve never used before, like:

650 _0 ǂa Dish towels ǂx Standards.

There is also a code for the Cont: fixed field for titles containing standards and specifications:

    Cont: u

A search for an LC classification correlated to “Dish towels” produced no results (though I was pleased to see Dishwashing–Fiction nearby), but the broader term “Towels” suggested TS1781, which is for Miscellaneous textiles including bagging, shawls, towels, etc. so we have the call number:

    TS1781 ǂb .C68 1951

What a modern Catholic believes about women / by Sister Albertus Magnus McGrath. (OCLC #324934)

This gift book is already labeled with a call number “SD82 M147”, which is from the Union Theological Seminary classification (SD82 = History of women, matriarchy).

Our library uses Library of Congress classification, so we reclassed as

BV639.W7 M37 1972

BV639.A-Z is The Church and special classes, A-Z, so the first cutter W7 is for “women” and the second cutter “M37” is for McGrath.

I have seen classifications where “Mc” at the beginning of a name is filed as though it were “Mac”, but LCC is not like that. In the Subject Cataloging Manual on Shelflisting, under Filing rules (G 100), Rule 15 (“Names with a Prefix”) says that a prefix that is part of a name or place is treated as a separate word unless it is joined to the rest of the name directly or by an apostrophe (without a space), and should be filed letter by letter, and has as an example filing order:

  Marshall, Catherine, 1914-
  McGrath, Suzanne
  Metal products manufacturing

Space architecture : buildings for the outer space / Emanuel Dimas de Melo Pimenta. (OCLC #880139534)

I worry about classifying any book that starts with “The mysteries of the Universe are yet to be unraveled.” The contents are broad, including a section on extraterrestrial buildings, but just as much space is given to the individual human senses as we should think about them when designing those buildings.

I ended up classing it with the Design Library’s other books on space architecture (which is different from Space (Architecture)!) under TL797 (Space stations).

よつばと! / ǂc あずまきよひこ. (OCLC #71833438)

Most of our manga is classified under PN6790.J34; that is, PN6790 for comic books/strips by region or country (other countries), cuttered by .J3 for Japan. The table for this classification says that you can append 3 to further cutter by author, or append 4 to cutter by title, specifying that title is the preferred way.

This particular title (Yotsuba & !) has the call number:

    PN6790.J34 Y68 2003

We also have some volumes of the English translation under:

    PN6790.J34 Y6813 2005

Erfahrungen mit der Digitalisierung von rastermässig erfassten Linienstrukturen / Thomas Kreifelts … [et al.]. (OCLC #2794543)

If a set of books is part of an analyzed series that is classed together, the call number in the bib record for the set might be recorded in a format like:

    QA1 ǂb .G344 no. 30, etc.

That is, both volumes have a call number that starts QA1 .G344, but have enumeration based on their location in the series:

    QA1 .G344 no. 30
    QA1 .G344 no. 37

In our collection, we classify this particular series separately, so the call numbers for the two volumes in the set actually ended up as:

    GA102.4.E4 E73 1974 v.1
    GA102.4.E4 E73 1974 v.2
