Œuvres / Malebranche ; édition établie par Geneviève Rodis-Lewis, avec la collaboration de Germain Malbreil. (OCLC #6105260)

Series statements (including numbering) may not be prominent. This volume’s full statement is hidden in the back of the book among the printing information:

Ce volume, portant le numéro trois cent quatre-vingt-dix, de la “Bibliothèque de la Pléiade”…

RDA 1.8.3 on Numerals Expressed as Words (which applies to numbering within series) says to substitute numerals for numbers expressed as words, so this is recorded in the series statement as:

490 0_ ǂa Bibliothèque de la Pléiade ; ǂv 277, 390

Similarly, the series numbering example in the series authority record also indicates that this should be recorded as a numeral:

642 __ 283 ǂ5 DPCC ǂ5 DLC

so we record it that way in the series added entry:

830 _ 0 ǂa Bibliothèque de la Pléiade ; ǂv 277, 390

This gift book arrived in cataloging with some of its pages still uncut! It will have to go to preservation to have them cut before it is made available to our patrons.

Cárok és kalandorok : a “zavaros időszak” története / Szvák Gyula. (OCLC #922582189)

Several booksellers described this book as being in the “rainbow” series (“Szivárvány”) but I didn’t find that word on the piece anywhere, just a rainbow on the cover. I included a series statement for it so that it would be searchable:

490 0_ ǂa [Szivárvány]

but left it untraced, and also put it in brackets (following RDA 2.2.4) because I got the wording from somewhere other than the piece itself.

Ўзбек тили дарслиги : бошланғич мактабнинг тўртинчи синфи учун / М. Шамс, Т. Содиков. (OCLC #922535817)

The title page of this has the phrase “fourth class” spelled out (“тўртинчи синфи”), but on the cover it is abbreviated (“4-синфи”). The LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6 on Variant Title says they are only core for rare materials, but NLA PS considers most types of variant titles (including cover titles) to be core. I recorded this one to aid in searching:

246 14 ǂa Ўзбек тили дарслиги : ǂb бошланғич мактабнинг 4-синфи учун
246 14 ǂa Ŭzbek tili darsligi : ǂb boshlanghich maktabning 4-sinfi uchun

Dilbar : [ḣikoi︠a︡lar] / Karim Raḣimov ; rassom A. Nazirov. (OCLC #32449111)

I find it oddly satisfying to add holdings to a record with only one or two other holdings; it somehow makes them seem rarer than those I do original cataloging for (and as a bonus, I don’t have to do the original cataloging in Uzbek!)

Russian-English conversation book = Russko-angliĭskiĭ razgovornik / E.M. Coff and F.M. Rozhkova. (OCLC #46638889)

One reason to not limit your OCLC search by date is that the limit uses the fixed field copy of the date, which is easier to do math/comparison with than the variable field 260/264ǂc (which may include phrases like [not before 1800] and dates in other calendars) but in my experience is also coded incorrectly more often than the variable field.

An otherwise good record I found for this title had 1960 in the 260ǂc and the call number, but 1950 in the fixed field (now corrected).

Aerial photographs of Clay and Owsley counties, Kentucky. (OCLC #921306444)

In our last Third Thursday “bring your cataloging problems” sessions, our map cataloger brought some aerial photographs of “probably somewhere in Eastern Kentucky” taken in the 1970s. They had very little metadata on them to give us clues, so she’d selected two which seemed to have the most identifying features. How were we to find their specific locations? (Or should we just catalog them more generally, with the little information we did know?)

I posted the photos to reddit on the /r/whereisthis subreddit, and within a week I had an answer, complete with a Google Earth link which matched one of my posted photos. Success! We now have a nice full record with specific subject access:

651 _0 ǂa Clay County (Ky.) ǂv Aerial photographs.
651 _0 ǂa Owsley County (Ky.) ǂv Aerial photographs.

“Russian despotism” : the origins and dissemination of an early modern commonplace / by Marshall Tillbrook Poe. (OCLC #31820585)

The OCLC record we found for this dissertation (and its reproductions) indicate an extent of 451 leaves:

300 vi, 451 leaves ; ǂc 28 cm

which is consistent with our table of contents, but our volume only goes up to 367 pages. We are missing the conclusion chapter! There are very few holdings on the OCLC records, so I’ll check with the selector to find out whether we want to keep the incomplete volume.
