South Union Shaker Village / photographs and text by David Toczko ; foreword by the Sabbathday Lake Shakers. (OCLC #875257539)

At a recent conference, I went to a cataloging “Ask the Experts” panel, and shared my grumpiness about RDA’s lack of “writer of foreword” relationship designator. They pointed me toward the general instruction which says “If none of the terms listed in this appendix is appropriate or sufficiently specific, use another concise term to indicate the nature of the relationship.”

So what do you think? Is it reasonable to just use “writer of foreword” (as I’ve done on this record) or is this a slippery slope?

Opening prayers : impeachment trial of the president of the United States, January 7-February 12, 1999 / Lloyd John Ogilvie ; [prepared under the direction of Gary Sisco]. (OCLC #41594951)

For typical monographs, we put the barcode in the same place (upper left, covering whatever) but for government documents we don’t obscure text, stamps or stickers, so sometimes it ends up in strange places.

Digital architecture / author, Dimitris Kottas. (OCLC #872755012)

RDA 3.4.5.18 on individually paged volumes (as opposed to a continuous pagination over multiple volumes) says to record the number of volumes (units) but omit the pagination (subunits). For this set, extent would be:

2 volumes

There is an optional addition which allows specifying the pagination:

2 volumes (277, 263 pages)

The LC-PCC PS says in general not to apply the addition, but the NLA PS says to generally apply it. The copy for this set in OCLC is from National Library of Australia (Symbol AU@) which problably explain why it has been included in the copy!

Freedom 7 : the historic flight of Alan B. Shepard, Jr. / Colin Burgess. (OCLC #857972968)

Call numbers with three cutters are pretty unusual in the Library of Congress classification schedule; I mainly see them in G (maps).

If you are using a class number that already has two cutters specified, such as TL789.8.U6A5 (Space travel, United States, Apollo Program), you still need to extend the call number to sort items by main entry. Rather than adding a third cutter (starting with another letter) just extend the second cutter with numbers.

For this title (about a mission from Project Mercury), I started by identifying the second cutter used for that project (M4) and checking the LC catalog to shelflist, ordering by main entry. Library of Congress already has a title in their collection about this topic by this author (“Selecting the Mercury seven”) with call number:

TL789.8.U6 M428 2011

so I shifted the cutter yet again to also order by title:

TL789.8.U6 M427 2014

Learn 2D game development with C# / Jebediah Pavleas, Jack Keng-Wei Chang, Kelvin Sung, Robert Zhu. (OCLC #868648400)

This title has two abbreviations which can be recorded in a variant title, according to the LC-PCC PS for RDA 2.3.6.3:

246 3_ ǂa Learn two-dimensional game development with C sharp

It may be bit excessive, as I don’t know how many budding game developers would search our catalog for “two-dimensional game development”. Also, though C# is not in the first five words of the title (the cut-off in the LC-PCC PS), C Sharp is an alternate spelling of C# and might be searched for by a patron who had only heard of the language, but not seen its name written.

動物のお医者さん / ǂc 佐々木倫子. (OCLC #881816845)

That ad strip around the bottom of the book is called an “obi” (same word used for kimono sash). On this volume, it covers up a charming feature: the rooster has a soccer ball! (We’ll remove the obi before adding the mylar cover).

The author of this series is Sasaki Noriko, who seems to be a different person than “Sasaki, Noriko” (ethnology scholar) and “Sasaki, Noriko (Soprano)”, so I needed a different authorized access point. I checked VIAF and found a heading for her which matches the information I found in her Wikipedia article.

I initially thought about using an occupation in the heading, like “Sasaki, Noriko (Manga artist)” which might be easier to select at a glance, but RDA 9.19.1.5 says to only use this if date of birth/death or fuller form are not available.

Biometrika tables for statisticians. Volume 2 / edited by E.S. Pearson and H.O. Hartley. (OCLC #223625397)

Despite this 1972 volume being marked as Volume 2, I was most comfortable having it on its own record in the catalog. The preface even says “We claim no more than that our Volume 2 is one of many possible companions to Volume 1.” The volume does not have its own unique title, so Volume 2 is in the 245 ǂn (number of part).

One reason for the oddness is that Volume 1 of this title had a lengthy publishing history of its own, described in our 1984 printing:

    First Edition 1954
    Reprinted 1956
    Second edition 1958
    Reprinted 1962
    Third Edition 1966
    Reprinted with additions 1970
    Reprinted with corrections 1976
    Reprinted 1984

Though we have several versions of Volume 1 in our collection (1958, 1966, 1976), the piece in hand is not specifically “part 2” of any of our volume 1’s.

National Folk Museum of Korea : South Korrea, Jongno-gu / Lambert M. Surhone, Mariam T. Tennoe, Susan F. Henssonow (Ed.). (OCLC #833181266)

This book is a collection of about 70 Wikipedia articles, starting with National Folk Museum of Korea and including some articles it links to (and some that are maybe further down the tree). I don’t know where the cover photo came from.

As the articles have since been edited/improved and are still freely available online, I have asked the selector to confirm that she’d like this added to our print collection.

I admit that I looked for my name in the lists of Article Sources and Contributors, hoping I’d touched one of the articles in my wiki gnome activities, but no luck.

Los orígenes de la lengua española en América : los primeros cambios en las Islas Canarias, las Antillas y Castilla del Oro. (OCLC #881499422)

I think this is the first time I’ve used America in a subject heading; often the books I catalog with “America” in the title are actually about the United States, but this one really is about the Americas in general, including surrounding islands.

I included the very broad geographic area codes:

043 __ ǂa n------ ǂa s------

Zooming in : the cosmos at high resolution / edited by Regina von Berlepsch. (OCLC #868967245)

My library has no other volumes of this serial, so I chose to catalog this one as a monograph, classified separately, with the series traced. I found two monograph records for this particular volume in OCLC, and the more popular one recorded the title as:

245 00 ǂa Reviews in modern astronomy. ǂn 23, ǂp Zooming in:
the cosmos at high resolution / ǂc edited by Regina von
      Berlepsch.

This is a reasonable approach, as the series title is more prominent than the volume title, even on the title page, but I prefer to use the volume title as the title proper, with the series in a series statement / added entry:

    490 1_ ǂa Reviews in modern astronomy ; ‡v 23
    830 _0 ǂa Reviews in modern astronomy ; ‡v 23.

Our analyzing, tracing and classifying decisions for this series differ from LC practice, so I edited our local series authority to reflect this.

I expect these two records will eventually be merged, as differing selection of title proper does not justify a new record.
