ALA Midwinter!

I am currently at ALA Midwinter – yay!

I’ll be at the Jane-a-thon preconference, and probably many other sessions with “cataloging” in their name. I’ll also be tweeting my head off with the hashtag #alamw15.

I’ll also be speaking on Sunday morning at the Cataloging and Classification Research Interest Group about one of my projects: MARC and Non-MARC Metadata for Digitized Government Documents.

Therapy sessions : demonstrations / with John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman. (OCLC #900897868)

This DVD set had so many titles that I had a hard time selecting one for the Title proper.

The title screen on the first DVD (where I would normally look, following RDA 2.2.2.3) read “Scripts for marital therapy training”. This phrase did not appear on any of the other discs, so I was not sure it was a collective title, and not just a title for first disc.The label on the disc was similar to the container: “Therapy sessions: demonstrations”. The disc menu (on all discs) only has the title “Assessment & intervention”.

I selected the title from the container/disc label as it was the most prominent (it was also chosen for different editions) and used the others as variant titles:

US Army, Navy, Air Force, 1970-1972 / ǂc составитель И. В. Модестов. (OCLC #900740312)

Ugh, sorry. I made a monograph record for this volume before realizing that it was part of the serial “Foreign military news”, of which we already have a partial run. It looks very similar to those other pieces, except that they all say “Foreign military news” across the top; this one does not say it anywhere. The title page does have its parallel title “Зарубежная  военная хроника” and “(на английском языке)” (in English), and the dates seem right. The record I derived from also had “foreign military news” in an 830.

Unfortunately the title is slightly too old (1973) to have an ISSN, which was not published as an ISO standard until 1975. I am pretty confident about adding the volume to our serial record though. Sorry about adding the weirdo “no holdings” record to OCLC.

Do it the hard way; Rube Goldberg and modern times. (OCLC #111971)

This government document has a pop-up of a Rube Goldberg machine! It is a fairly simple one, similar to this noise-maker.

RDA does not specifically address pop-up or otherwise movable books, so I looked at LC’s guidelines for Toy and Moveable (T&M) books. Following those guidelines, I included a 500 note:

but as there was only only illustration like this, I did not go so far as to include the subject heading:

Mongol gagnuuryn zhor / bėltgėsėn, L. Batchuluun ; ėrkhėlsėn, L. Khu̇rėlbaatar. (OCLC #182521192)

I was slightly alarmed when I saw the cover of this book – what script is that?

Fortunately (a) the title page includes the title in Cyrillic, (b) our fabulous Russian selector had already identified a good OCLC record, and © he also pointed me to this resource which includes information about Mongolian transcription. Though I’m not familiar with Mongolian, given those three elements, I was able to copy catalog this title with confidence.

Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe. (OCLC #43026739)

This government document is a single sheet of paper, folded like a tri-fold brochure (and housed in an envelope to protect it).

RDA 3.4.5.14 on extent of Single Sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record the extent as 1 folded sheet followed by the number of pages laid out on the sheet, in parentheses.”

RDA 3.5.1.4.11 on dimensions of Single Sheets says “if the sheet is designed to be read in pages when folded, record only the height of the sheet when folded” (as though it is a volume).

So for this document, the physical description is:

Fabrication [to construct by assembling diverse parts] and fabrication [an untruthful statement] / edited by Amit Wolf. (OCLC #880682694)

I struggled with whether to include the bracket punctuation that appears in this title; the brackets do appear on the title page, but might be interpreted as saying that the content in them (“to construct by assembling diverse parts”, “an untruthful statement”) came from somewhere other than on the piece.

RDA 1.7.3 on Transcription of Punctuation says to transcribe punctuation as it appears on the source, and has examples including ellipses (…) which might cause similar confusion.

The brackets themselves will usually not affect searching (in many systems, they are ignored for word/phrase indexing), but I did include a variant title that only included only the words in the larger font:

The warlock’s book : secrets of black magic from the ancient grimoires / by Peter Haining ; illustrated by George Underwood based on original woodcuts. (OCLC #6671654)

In OCLC, variation in printing, manufacture or distribution date alone does not justify creating a new record. Though this item was printed in 1973, the manifestation (edition) was published in 1971, so we can use a 1971 record. A printing date can additionally be recorded in the record:

but only the publication information goes in the fixed fields:

The Oprah phenomenon / edited by Jennifer Harris and Elwood Watson ; with a foreword by Robert J. Thompson. (OCLC #900086861)

The foreword by Robert J. Thompson is advertised on the cover, so seemed like useful information to include. Though it does not appear on the title page, I added it to the statement of responsibility without brackets; RDA 2.4.2.2 says that it may be taken from anywhere on the resource, and only needs brackets if it is taken from somewhere outside the resource.

I also wanted to add an authorized access point for Robert J. Thompson, but he has a very common name. A search for “robert thompson” in the authority file brought up more than a hundred results (including variants like Bob and Bobby) many of which had helpful qualifiers like “Musician” but most of which only had a date of birth.

The book does not provide his date of birth, but does note his affiliation with Syracuse University. Using this information, I found a Wikipedia article for him, which provided his date of birth, as well as several other works by him. I searched OCLC for some of these other works, and used them to identify his access point:

700 1_ Thompson, Robert J., ǂd 1959- ǂe writer of foreword.

His name authority record is very brief. Had it identified him as a media scholar (as the title of the wikipedia article does) or included his affiliation with Syracuse, that would have saved some work; I’m glad that RDA is leaning that way for authority work.
