AHRQ research activities / Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. (OCLC #44512447)

In preparation for migration for a new ILS, we’re re-examining our policy of using item records for ebooks, as the migration process will identify any resource with an item record as physical, and we want our ebooks correctly identified as electronic.

Before deleting anything, we searched for items using our generic ebook barcode (“EBOOKNONCIRC”) on print mfhds, and items with more specific barcodes on internet mfhds. We found a couple of irregularities in both searches.

This title’s multi-format government document record had both print and internet holdings, and the item with its specific barcode had been linked to the internet holding; it has now been re-linked to the print.

Reason and religion : philosophy and religion in a scientific age. (OCLC #59630)

Be careful when typing a general-sounding series title into an 830 and controlling it in OCLC; if it’s in a 430 for a more specific series, it may do something you don’t expect!

This resource appears to have a series title “general studies”, a phrase which appears in a 430 for the heading:

Cass library of African studies. General studies

so an 830 controls to that heading.

That’s not the desired link; the book in hand is not from the right publisher, nor is it about African studies, so I ended up just including it untraced:

(I once saw this in a medical book record, where “case files” was controlled as “Scooby-Doo! case files”!)

“About the author” sections are gold for selecting established authorized access points for authors/contributors. Though the text might not include the specific distinguishing formation included in the established heading (middle name, year of birth), they often include information that might appear in the name authority record, such as affiliation with particular institutions, or other works they have authored or contributed to.

For both of these authorities, the titles listed in the 670 fields also appear in this resource’s “sobre los autores” section:

Outlines of a philosophy of religion based on psychology and history / Auguste Sabatier. (OCLC #1058227)

For each series in the catalog, we may choose to trace (explicitly link resources in the series to a series authority via an authorized access point, like with MARC 830) or not trace (but maybe transcribe in a series statement/note). We often don’t trace for purely publisher-related series, like:

490 0_ ǂa Harper torchbooks ; ǂv TB23

but trace for other kinds of series, such as those where a publisher groups their titles by subject:

490 1_ ǂa The Library of religion and culture.
830 _0 ǂa Library of religion and culture.

In MARC, the decision to trace or not trace is recorded in authority field 645. Series authority records often exist to explicitly state that the decision has been made to not link to them (example).

The Zend-Avesta / translated by James Darmesteter. (OCLC #679090)

Some works are specifically mentioned in the LC schedule. For example Avesta (or Zend-Avesta) starts at BL1515, under which are classed Original texts by date. Translations are classed under BL1515.2.A-Z cuttered by languages A-Z.

Following this, Library of Congress assigned a call number to this English translation:

BL1515.2 .E53 1880

using .E5 for English, followed with a ‘3’ to denote the extensive commentary. I’m relabeling our copy to use this call number.

The title of this series is presented two different ways on the piece:

  • For King & Empire
  • For King and Empire

In MARC, we record the series statement:

490 1_ ǂa For King & Empire ; ǂv v. 2

which corresponds to the RDA element Series statement, but there is no element or MARC field to record a variant series statement to provide access for the “For King and Empire” form.

In a different environment, we could represent the series as a separate work with its own title proper and variant titles, and link the two with “in series”/“series container of” relationships.

Road movie [videorecording] / R.E.M. (OCLC #39705076)

The Universal Product Code (UPC) is a barcode found on many products, with the most common form being 12 digits long, shown in human-readable groups of 1-5-5-1 below the barcode; those outer digits are part of the code, so be sure to include them if you are typing it in, even if they are zeros!

In the barcode itself, each digit is represented by a pattern of black and white lines. For a given digit, the pattern is different if it is used in the left half vs. the right half of the barcode, but in a consistent way: black and white are inverted. The patterns were also cleverly chosen such that scanning the barcode upside-down does not confuse the scanner.

In MARC, UPCs are recorded in the 024 field with first indicator 1:

In OCLC, they can be searched using the sn: (Standard number) index.

The story of the unknown warrior : 11 November 1920 / Michael Gavaghan. (OCLC #908110563)

The LC class number D680.A-Z is for WWI celebrations, memorials, and monuments in regions or countries other than the United States (with the cutter starting with A-Z specifying that region or country).

This cutter is taken from a predefined list, the Regions and Countries table from the Subject Cataloging Manual on Shelflisting (G 300).

The cutter for Great Britain is .G7, so this book gets the call number:
